WHY and WIIFM

I loved the quiz question that dealt with WHY and WIFFM as it related to negative staff members. As a student of change mangement, I thought the example of how to motivate someone simply by explaining the why and how this choice would affect them was well done. In fact, I plan to place the WHY and WIFFM strategy in my tool box for future use.
Teachers often offer their students a rational for teaching a concept and offer real life applications in their lessons. This mode of remembering to offer these things is quick and quirky.

Rick,

The Pacific Institute teaches that it takes 11 positive people to make up for a negative person. Do all you can to hang with the 11.

Jeffrey Schillinger

I really enjoyed the discussion on negativity. I never really thought about how it effects someone. I took some time and sat back and thought about all the places I have worked and who was or was not a negative influence. Its really amazing how many negative people I was able to remember compare to the positive people. I guess I tend to remember them more than I thought I would.

I agree, Julie. I love the WHY and the WIIFM concept. I can see value for both faculty and students. I like the idea that we actually in a way empower our teams by explaining the motivation--and allowing instructors to consider the impact.

Tiffany,

The negative folks can really bring down an institution. What do you do to combat their negativity?

Hace a few of negative taff members on our team. Destroys the morale.

Thanks, Julie. Most individuals are interested in how something will impact them. If we provide the reason for the objective or activity, even before they ask why, we will be ahead in the game.
