Knowing students.
In a short period of time what are the key questions to ask student without over stepping or making a student feel that you are invaiding personal space.
I also ask about their goals and why they have chosen nursing as a profession. It encourages open communication regarding their past and their dreams. I also take an active interest in their positive behaviors such as good grades or good questions in class. I promote discussions and always remain after class for face time.
Thank you for this post, Gerry. Others taking this course should find it helpful.
Usually the conversation starts with something like "I have no idea what I'm doing" or "I'm going to fail this class." Then I ask what areas they are having difficulties with, then point out where we covered that and how they can access that information. Sometimes I will suggest tutoring, then work to overcome their objections about why they can't attend. If they are having transportation difficulties I'll try to arrange a ride. If there are work conflicts I try to set up alternative times or help them with things to tell their employer so they can make them. It helps to re-enforce why their here and what, in the long term is most important. I know my student pretty well and can usually get them to open up about what is really bothering them without having to ask too personal questions.
Thanks, Gerry.
What techniques do you use to try to get your students to communicate their true goals and to give you information on the best way to help them?
I think the keys to this are the 4th and 5th items. They are really two sides of the same coin and the items we can most readily have an impact on.
Arthur,
There is no definitive answer to this question. Much depends on the relationship you have wit the student you are talking to and what kind of information you are looking for.
Most of the time questions like these should be helpful. Keep the questions abouth the student's goals and you should be okay.
"What are your goals?"
"What do you hope to get out of this class?"
"What kind of things may make (are making) it more difficult to echieve your goals?"
"What can I do to help you reach your goals for this class or for your career?"
