i try and do small group learning. It gives the quiet students a chance at actively talking and working with other students. Plus its a gereat way for my students to get to knoe each other and form bonds.
I agree also, I observe the students on the first day and try to address the students who are quiet on a one on one basis away from the other students. This seems to help get the students to open up a little bit and they are more likely to ask me questions when they have them.
I agree completely. The quiet students always pose the most question. You never know if it is a personal issue, the just don't get the material or if that's just the way they learn. I always try to take some time and talk to them to find out what the particulars are on an individual basis. Hopefully if it is a comprhesion issue an early intervention can help that student and prevent them failing, thereby improving retention.
Thank you, Luis.
Some students are just quiet by nature. It is important for teachers to get them involved in class dicussions by calling on them and ensuring that other students do not shout out answers over them. If we allow other students to talk over them, they will almost never try to participate.
Another technique is to break students up into dyads and triads so that the shy students are only ineracting with a few folks at a time. This also builds community.
