Culture Club

It is important for all employees to buy into the vision that you are in it together. The outcome is to have students that are successful. If everyone that is in the enviroment and on the staff is presented this concept and encouraged, it becomes part of the fabric of the school. That overflows into how we "do business" with our students. I also belive that the message of positivity is far more powerful than people think, and this class was a reminder of how contageous it can be.

Janet,

Many of the folks who take this class are Chef's who are giving back to theie profession. It seems like most really care about their students.

Jeffrey Schillinger

I believe that for the majority of the time my co teaching chefs are very nurturing for the students we have from so many different backgrounds. I think the culture is positive. I enjoy motivating the students to whatever level they are capable of. I love to witness their progress throughout the remaining classes they have at this particular learning center.

Well said, everyone! I think that one of the great challenges is being left blind to a vision or mission. Sometimes change comes so hard and fast, it's hard to see where we need to go. But then it's time to refocus and drive the simplest vision of education every one that is in the room in that moment. Even with a clear vision, working an effective vision in the moment is just as important.

I agree Joseph about the bad habit of complaining in front of students. In fact I let my students know we all have problems in our lives and to be professional we need to "check" our problems at the door. That does not mean we are not interested in them it just means we can learn more productively when we shut our minds off to the "outside" world. This has really been helpful as the students agree the problems will still be there when and after we complete the task or class at hand.

I agree with you both. The learning environment is comprised of those that understand our vision and are vital to our success. Those instructors who feel that they are the gatekeepers to the industry need to be let go of their post. Those that think they are in a position of greatness and do not need to understand our students needs and the colleges’ vision are doing more harm than good. Positive attitude, mentoring and leadership are what we need to reach higher plateaus.

Michelle, I totally agree. It is not often easy to obtain, but once a positive environment is created amongst faculty, it will change the environment of the school immensely. Unfortunately, there are always those who do not see the woods for the trees. They also have a bad habit of complaining in front of students, being annoyed that someone asks a question. The old, well you should know this already for me is a sure fire sign that the instructor is done. This is a cancer that can ruin a business very quickly and just kill the motivation of the student body. Who wants to learn from a miserable, whiny grump anyway. Go get a job collecting tolls this way no one has to hear your crap.
