Blah...Blah
Organizational culture...does that mean that whoever is in charge it is their energy or attitude we must endure....otherwise its just blah...blah...blah
Jason,
The campus director/president can go a long way toward setting the total mood for the campus. If that person engages with students and is willing to invest a little time and money to say thank you to students and staff, the positive attitude will permeate the institution.
Jeffrey Schillinger
I would agree with that assessment. When I first came to the campus that I am currently at the director was a very up-beat, extremely positive and employee focused individual. He left and they brought in someone else. He has his own positive aspects but with the change in personality at the top, the campus as certainly changed in the way it feels.
I agree. This is especially true if you keep having changes in administration and they don't share the same vision as the former. All of a sudden you have a change in culture. This only leaves everyone confused.
Teri,
Some folks hate meetings and believethey are unproductive most of the time. Some prefer regular written communication instead. What are your keys to productive meetings.
Jeffrey Schillinger
I to believe the attitudes of all people on staff should be working to achieve the same goals. It is difficult when communication is not available from the top to the bottom of the employees on staff. I believe meetings should be a priority for everyone on every level on a continual basis. This helps keep everyone focused and on the same mission of helping students.
At times I have felt the same way. A while back I attended a training session that discussed the concept of "locus of control". I came to realize that those with an external locus of control tend to feel the way you do, but those with an internal locus of control feel that they also have a large stake in things like energy and attitude.
Meher,
Leadership starts at the top with clearly defined and followed principles.
Jeffrey Schillinger
very true. If the president had great positive attitude, respects everyone and has a great customer service. this reflects on the enitre campus and everyone would try to adopt his style.
Great idea! The problem is the lack of time, but it should be a priority for every leader to "step on the floor" or into the classroom for a short time regularly. This will bridge gaps and help students and staff feel administration is involved and values what they are doing.
Cheryl ,
One of the keys to good teaching is to close by giving the students a compelling reason to come back.
Jeffrey Schillinger
Make what you have to say so interesting the students can't wait for the next class.
John,
Some colleges ask their staff members, including leadership, to serve as guest speakers or to teach one or two sections each year. It keeps all connected.
Jeffrey Schillinger
Alot of times the faculty feel as though the management are disconnected. I feel as though the management should get there hands dirty every now and then so they know what the faculty is dealing with on a daily basis.
I do agree that leaders are very responsible for setting the overall tone of a school. They have the ability to influence others by the way they handle daily activities and interactions. They can be an example of what they expect from their employees.
Patricia,
In my experience, the Campus President and, to a lesser extent, the Dean set the tone on the campus.
Jeffrey Schillinger
I believe that the whole organization needs to have positive leaders so that the quality and excellence of the school can be successful and then it is carried over to the students.
