Positive environment

Creating a class with active learning techniques has improved student attitudes and learning process

Positiveness in the classroom makes a difference in the learning experience; identifying those who have barriers outside the class and guiding them in overcoming these will turn their point of view into a plus positive!

Carol,

There are a number of possible techniques to get students to be active learners. A web search on active learning will provide you with a lot of good ideas. If you email me at jeffreyschillinger@hotmail.com, I will reply with some handouts that may be helpful.

What would be some active learning techniques that would improve learning process? The class gets to meet eachother and speak about themselves for two hours on the first day of class, including myself. This seems to give the students a feeling of belonging.

Joanne,

Good post. Negativity is tough to overcome.

It is very important to show that you are positive and make sure all your students respond in the same way. You must be alert to any student that is negative and spend some time to find out if he/she is having a problem you can then send them for some help.

Lorrie,

I agree that letting poor behavior go unchecked leads to a poor learning atmosphere?

Address negativity immediately. Ignoring negativity will result in the contagious virus to become accepted by the entire class ultimately.

I do interactive games. I involve all student in everything. I have group discussions if i see certain people has not answered I address them.

Atiba,

Thanks for this post. What are one or two of the most popular techniques you use to involve as many students as possible?

Jeffrey Schillinger

Changing the classroom technique can help students stay involved; you are reaching each type of learner in your classroom by switching up your style of teaching when a student is not getting the information

Yes you need to change the learning classroom technique up some to keep students involved

That is so true, having one student who is negative clouds other students ability or desire to learn or participate in lecture.

Finding constructive ways with dealing with criticism, sarcarasm and negatively can be developed as an artform. The easiest approach is to be confrontational, but the usually ends up with the opposite effect desired. First try redirecting the conversation. Should that fail, tell the student that you would love discussing his concerns outside of class.

Making sure to keep your classroom drama free is essential for the learning atmosphere. Keeping the classroom atmosphere open for discussion within a structured learning atmosphere is essential for students.
