I have had several students who sail through classes with very little difficulty until they reach the end of their program. In their last classes they struggle, even fail. When you talk with the student you realize they lack the vision to see themselves actually performing in their new career "school is safe" "I don't know enough" "I really can't do it in the real world". The first couple of years I taught this took me by surprise. Now I watch for this type of student as they approach the end of their program. I talk and listen to other faculty to make sure we recognize this pattern early.
