Jaclyn, I look at different grading systems with the idea of "does this measure the degree (or absence of) learning that's occurred. There's always different ways to approach grading, but students who have learned material, have a good grasp and understanding will demonstrate their learning using whatever system is in place. That's why it's important to outline how a student will be graded at the outset, then stick to the plan. Students don't like mid-course changes very well. Barry Westling
Kathleen, Sharing grade and status information has a place of importance no less than that of the instruction itself. Students do better with feedback, support, and encouragement, and discussion with them frequently is a great way I've found that's successful. Plus it helps me get to know my students better too. Barry Westling
Jaclyn, These are all good methods. I like to think "as a student would feel" if I were taking my own class. More difficult material is carefully delivered in segments, with supporting activities mixed in to keep students involved and participating. Barry Westling
Kathleen, What a great trait! And being approachable, although not a panacea, can open up many more doors than just instructor knowledge alone. When students feel that openness, we have more opportunity to interact with them (one-on-one, and as a group). Barry Westling
Kathleen, Yes, a change in routine with a different "voice" can be helpful. Guest speakers, and a host of other activities help keep classes interesting and students engaged. I find students are very willing to ask bold questions of speakers, and usually the speaker is not shy about answering their questions either. Barry Westling
Lilia, I am always impressed with how much students seem to appreciate a good field trip, or haviving guest speakers come to class. Obviously, neither of these activities can be a substitute for real work experience, but receiving a glimpse of some segment or hearing from someone who is working in the field can be motivational. Getting students to be be enthusiastic and motivated about their learning is a great achievement in and of itself, and therefore, worth the effort for planning and coordinating these activities. Jaclyn, This sounds great, and feedback is always a good thing. As instructors, we are responsible for the knowledge and understanding of the material the students need to learn. Sometimes we have to achieve our mission with media resources that students don't particulary care for but we use it because we know it will help the students. Barry Westling
Jaclyn, Yes, and the degree of preparation rarely turns out to be that much of a chore, it's just overcoming the procrastination and planning to coordinate the resources, lectures, and gather the materials needed. Students appreciate instructors who they feel are well prepared. Barry Westling
David, The "before and after" process is a great idea -- I've done that more than a few times. Students feel encouraged, proud, and for some, a bit surprised at the progress they made. Barry Westling
Sharon, Pretesting can be a great help to instructors, assisting them plan where more or less emphasis may be needed. I don't grade pretests and students are nearly always willing to "test their mete" when they know there is no impact to their grade. Barry Westling
