Sharon, You mention some good outcomes involved with teaching journals. When we self evaluate ourselves in the way a teaching journal provides, I think we are able to be more introspective about our effectiveness, and also reflect on what we might want to modifify to improve our instructional prowess. We are usually more critical of ourselves. Nonetheless, teaching journals do help make us better instructors, in my opinion. Barry Westling
Steve, Creative teachers seem to always come with creative ideas, I'm sure you will find suitable activities that can fairly and accurately measure student challenge points. Student competitions is one way that comes to mind as a possibility. Barry Westling
Christopher, When I grade assignments, whenever possible I try to use rubrics -- these provide information that both I and the students will bound by. At times, it really takes effort to be fair and as accurate as possible. Barry Westling

Christopher, Creating a presence as you describe can be effective in many cases. There are times students are just unruly, and more aggressive techniques are needed, such as asking students to stop the chatter, asking specific students questions when they begin to lose attention, or even taking a mental break ( like one minute), then returning to the topic. In the extreme, it may be necessary to even change activities rather than waste everybody's time. I also try to be real -- if something occurs that is humorous, I join in the laughter of the moment, then get back to… >>>

Christopher, Yep! "Adaptable skills" is a great term to describe the capabilities a graduate will need for success in the work setting. For me, I include communication, writing, professionalism, attendance and punctuality, and appropriate speech and common courtesies associated with a given career area. These, in addition to content knowledge and related skills will usually prepare the graduate well. Barry Westling
Christopher, Absolutely! I believe class begins at the moment of the stated class start time. That means copies, handouts, overheads, PPTs, lecture, activities, announcements -- all this sort of pre-class preparation has to ready ( just as we expect of our students). Barry Westling
Dr. Fu-Sen, Great! I think of the instruction I provide as a journey, and course evaluation is like a map that helps guide students where they may getting off-course, and also how to get back on track to reach the destination. Barry Westling
Dr. Fu-Sen, Yes, and this is great example of the need for and importance of being student-centered instructors. The more we can individualize our instruction, dealing with specfic student needs for understanding, the better the students will respond to our instruction, and in the end, be able to apply and incorporate their learning to the real world of work. I agree. Also, confidence in understanding the role of instructor, and a comprehensive grasp of content knowledge both play a big part in what and where a good instructor targets their attention, which results in greater effectiveness. Students sense an instructors creative talents, and usually welcome it.
