Charlotte, Right, and serious students will not only appreciate this level of [preparation but also come to respect and trust their instructor for the effort. Barry Westling
Dave, Sure, 5-10 question scan-tron quizzes ought to be simple to grade and virtually immediate in return to students. Essay, word problems, or calculations usually take longer to grade, but often demonstrate thinking, and serve as a better measure of learning. Barry Westling
Dave, I believe instructors who are willing to take in personal or institutional evaluation (supervisory, peer, student), they are already on track to make improvements. It's the ones that feel they know it all, or are resistant to change that create a barrier to better student learning outcomes. Barry Westling
Kerry , Yes, it's only a few students who are not interested in their grades. So it's a valuable method to improve trust and confidence in the instructor by doing all we can to state when grades will be posted, and then assure that we stick to that. Unfortunately, while everyone wants the good grades, not everyone is willing buckle down to do the work that legitimately earns those grades. Nonetheless, we need to do our part. Barry Westling
Cenek, Good. Students lose attention for all kinds of reasons. Getting back on track and focused can be done subtlety, or doing whole change-ups in the planned lesson. Barry Westling
Wayne, Good practice, as you're engaging students by involving them and by necessity, involving multiple senses. Barry Westling
Cenek, Yes, of course. And if we can also give them help with life skill and soft skills, these will help them keep their employment once they snag a job. Barry Westling
Cenek, Plan B is sometimes the best plan. I've created back ups that I substituted intentionally, and it was a terrific success. Barry Westling
Rasiel, I agree. When students sense their instructor is sincerely interested in their success, and provides instruction with passion and interest in assuring that effective learning outcomes are being met, that adds to better morale, respect, and trust -- all positive contributions to successful classroom experiences. Barry Westling
Rasiel, Yeah, it would be wonderful if we could provide life skills that students could use to benefit them not only in their professional career, but also in the backside of their life, contributing to improved family, marital, and personal satisfaction and happiness. Barry Westling
