Cheryl, I believe you hit on a couple of extremely important points in your comments. I believe involving employees in the planning process is even more critical today then ever. There are so many external factors impacting higher education and the economy overall that people need a clear vision of where the organization is going and what it needs to do to get there. I believe honesty and continuing to include people in the process during difficult times is appreciated by employees and provides comfort that the organization has a plan on how to move forward. A collaborative corporate culture… >>>

Peggy, Nice example. Connecting overall organizational strategy with key initiatives and timely implementation of those initiatives at the campus level are imperative. To often the broader organizational strategy is not adequetely connected with the people and resources to execute it effectively. It sounds like your organization has made this important connection! Do you have any examples you have seen where the connecting of strategy with required people and resources to execute have not occured?

Jean,

Curious to see what changes you are seeing that stand out the most to you as you work with different schools?  What are the biggest changes you are seeing?

Blake

Shawn, Nice example of how strategic thinking process is a part of your daily work. Because alot of folks are involved in your projects I am sure that you have to do alot of listening, alot of collaboration with others, and scanning what is changing internally and exeternally. I am glad to here this course has helped provide a framework to help with what it sounds like comes very natural to you!
Adela, Good list of characteristics! Any others?
Adela, What are the steps you would follow to ensure that strategic thinking occurs?
Priscilla, Hope you are enjoying the course. I think getting to the root cause of a problem is essential to making an effective decision and this decision making process helps you to get there more consistently. Can you think of any examples where you could have made a better decision using this process or alternatively provide an example of where you have made a good decision and the process you used to come to that decision? Andrea, This is a common challenge in organizations. One suggestion may be to visit with other leaders in your organization about building time in the multitude of meetings you have to occassionally set time aside to brainstorm, generate new ideas from a diverse group with different perspectives. A collaborative culture is fostered by this process. It does take time so you sometimes have to pick your spots but in the end it builds buy in from employees and also leverages the knowledge and great ideas from the entire organization. Have you ever read the book Death by Meeting by Patrick… >>>

Jared, Excellent point. Sometimes we can't see the forest through the trees! Research on effective leaders shows that they tend to think and see things one abstract level above the people that report to them. Stepping back and looking holistically at a problem or opportunity and taking into account different perspectives is essential to good leadership. Taking the time to reflect as a leader is a challenge sometime when we get so caught up in the daily grind. However, strategic thinking requires time to do just that. Do you have an example of a situation you have dealt with recently… >>>

Wayne, I like your focus on questioning and listening. I think good strategic thinkers also understand that strategic thinking and planning is a dynamic process that never stops. Strong strategic leaders continually listen, question assumptions, scan the environment both internally and externally, and make connections on how these things may impact their organization. Have you worked for someone that you would consider an outstanding strategic thinker? If so, what were the things you observed that made them a strong strategic leader?
