Wayne, I think that you bring up a couple of very good points. "Confronting Reality" is important if organizations are going to remain viable and continue to improve. At times it does take courage to stand up and state what the current reality really is (many times others intuitively feel the same thing but are afraid to say because it might disrupt the status quo). Organizations that create a culture that allows openness in saying what needs to be said even though it may not be popular, tend to adapt and change much more effectively. Alignment with the mission of… >>>

Kelly, Sounds like you have a tremendous amount on your plate and are highly valued! Gaining consensus and buy in is a major challenge when you are moving quickly on a number of fronts. I think a dynamic strategic planning process is becoming increasingly important in ensuring everyone is moving toward the same "north star" in a rapidly changing environment. I think this course will be helpful to you. Dr. Faulkner

Kelly, I think you are correct. We are dealing with a unique time in higher education. On one hand we are seeing significant enrollment growth across higher ed that is running counter cyclical to the troubled economy. On the other hand we are seeing increased regulation and significant changes. Leadership in higher ed today requires a unique balance of managing growth and as well as adapting policies, procedures and processes to align with changing regulations. This will require all of us to "think outside the box" in how we adapt to these trends. In addition to the vision and creativity… >>>

Eural, I like your thinking here. I also think that strategic thinking requires a leader to scan the internal and external environment and to be able to understand the relationships between many factors that may impact your decision. It is somtimes difficult when we are caught up in our day to day operational activities to step back and think strategically about key decisions but it is essential to our personal and organizational success. Are there other things you see as critical to being a good strategic thinker? Dr. Faulkner

Pamela, I think that putting students at the center of our decision making in higher ed is what really seperates outstanding, sustainable institutions whether they are proprietary, non-profit private or public. I think you are correct that at times some institutions loose sight of this and forget to consider the impact of decisions on students. We all have tough decisions to make to ensure our instituions remain fiscally viable and work within budgets. To not make these tough decisions can risk the institutions ability to serve students effectively in the future. However, institutions that remain committed to the core values… >>>

Pamela, Many companies talk about valuing innovation and creativity but the actual culture does not support and reward innovation and creativity. A culture based upon fear is not conducive to creativity. What could the school that you worked for previously do differently to increase creativity and innovation within the school?
Rebecca, I think you are right. The one thing I always try to keep in the back of my mind is that many businesses have failed because they were focused almost solely on short term financial gains. At the same time, many organizations have failed because they were so focused on the long term that they failed produce short term results required of a viable organization. Leadership that balances the two appears through research to support sustainable success. Nice work in this class!
An elderly and successful entrepreneur told me once that his successes were predicated on luck, good timing and good management teams. I think that sometimes that holds true in regards to introduction of new programming as well!! Your example is a good one and a common problem in our sector of education. I think that getting good input from advisory committees and also speaking to employers in other parts of the country that may be more progressive in certain industries is helpful in making decisions on timing for launching programs in emerging fields of employment.
Rebecca, You are correct in that the two are linked together. The creative process generates the new ideas and concepts and the innovation process transforms those ideas and concepts into a new deliverable product or service. You are also correct in that innovation is an ongoing process of continual improvement.
Rebecca, One thing that may help is to link your short term ideas to how they would impact key performance metrics that are important to your administration and also how they support long term goals. Most administrations are looking for solutions to problems not just having the problem identified. Providing a solution that supports organizational objectives is welcome in most organizations so I would keep the great ideas flowing!! Sincerely, Dr.Faulkner
