While our career services department comes in early and relatively often there might be opportunities to tie the course objectives into their resume as students complete each course.
The challenge for addressing social integration for our campus lies in the schedule. Students are in class for one day out of five and in the lab for the other four. Each day is five hours long. There is a half hour break before the next class arrives. There are three shifts. I see the opportunities for social integration to be done in the classroom day more than anywhere else.
Including an orientation topic every week for up through the first three courses would greatly improve the orientation program. The expectation is this would help retention.
A preparedness checklist would aid greatly in our admissions process. Too often I find the students have not considered what support they need to get through the program.
Lee, It is so true that applied arts, such as special fx makeup, do require the artist to have a thorough knowledge of their materials as well as having a deft hand. Your detailed assessment process certainly addresses all aspects of the specific skill(s) being learned and developed. Thank you for your post. Dr. Ron Hansen
Susan, Thank you for the detailed response. This strategy certainly sets up the student to do the hands on activity. What have you found successful when then following up with the student when hoe or she or doing the hands on activity that you have so carefully demonstrated and described? Dr. Ron Hansen
