Dax, I agree absolutely. I think continued practice helps give students both the confidence and ability to think more effectively on their feet. Elizabeth Kemler
Dax, High expectations can indeed be a problem; both in terms of finding a job quickly, and finding one that meets all their criteria. It's good that you're focusing on keeping them hopeful about their prospects while encouraging them to remain practical-which often does mean taking the 'not quite right' job until the right one comes along. Elizabeth Kemler
Kelley, It's great that you keep in contact with all three-that way you can get a full picture of how the student is doing. Elizabeth Kemler
Kelley, This is a great idea; really the best way to get the necessary practice. Elizabeth Kemler
Kelley, Definitely-using examples that the students can relate to is always helpful. Elizabeth Kemler
Kelley, I'm curious if you have any other methods for keeping them motivated when the job search gets difficult. Elizabeth Kemler
Dax, Could you clarify what you mean by using 'fear'? It sounds like you're using a very effective means to demonstrate the importance of networking. I always find it helps to use examples/analogies like this. Elizabeth Kemler
Dax, Yours sounds like a great approach to inspiration-both practical and personal. And these are the kinds of things that help to hear all along the way as well. Elizabeth Kemler
Stephen, While I agree that it is much harder to 'back track' if you've made a poor first impression, I also like to remind students that even if they didn't do their best, with the right guidance, there is often still the possibility for a second chance. I'm glad to hear that you have a place to send students for interview clothing. I offer recommendations through other courses I teach because it is so critical to look professional but of course not everyone has the money to spend on professional looking clothes. Elizabeth Kemler
Stephen, I agree completely. I taught presentation skills for many years, and people always commented on how they were able to utilize the skills we worked on, in many different settings. Elizabeth Kemler
