Stephen, What a great idea. I really like this-hope you don't mind if I share this with my students. Elizabeth Kemler
Stephen, I have always found cover letters to be a challenge. The best way to approach them is definitely gathering pertinent information-as much as you can about the company and its culture-and then using other good cover letters as a reference. Elizabeth Kemler
Stephen, I agree absolutely with this. Honest but constructive feedback and guidance will go a long way toward building their confidence and keeping them focused on their goals. Elizabeth Kemler
Stephen, This is a great approach. You are clearly steering your students in the right direction. We don't need to portray networking as a difficult or inauthentic thing, it really is as simple and easy as striking up that conversation at the grocery store. Elizabeth Kemler
Hi Stephen, Could you tell me which 'other one' you're referring to? And yes, definitely as the teacher, it's our job to keep students excited about their prospects as it is easy to get discouraged. So much work goes into the search and it doesn't always seem to pay off right away, so we need to keep finding ways of keeping our students motivated. Elizabeth Kemler
Lynn I have found both of these to be very useful resources, and the job club is a great idea. Please forgive the delayed response to your post, it only just came to my inbox.
LaSonya, This is so true. Most interviewers are trying to make the interview challenging so they can see how confident you are, and how comfortable with yourself. While I would say that how we do in interviews is not necessarily an accurate indication of what we're capable of, it is seen that way. Elizabeth Kemler
I love this idea. I am a big proponent of volunteering for so many reasons, but certainly a big one is, as you say, keeping your skills fresh, and the possibility of securing a job at that same organization.
I agree that it helps to be reminded of the original inspiration for making this kind of a change in one's life. And yes to fun job searches! Trying to come up with class-wide activities, games, anything to take the 'work' feeling out of it.
I agree that these kinds of things (much like dressing professionally for an interview) seem obvious, but the truth is, they're only obvious to us because we learned them at some point. Many students have not had the advantage of this kind of education-either at home or at school. This is another area where your non-judgmental approach will make all the difference.
