About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Kenneth, I do both because of the point you make about how much students love to hear from those in the field or go see people in action. These visits help to increase the value of the content to and for the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, How to you do this with your students? Do they do this once a week, one time or is it like an externship? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, What are some ways you do this with your students? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mark, I use guest speakers a lot in my courses as well. You are right about the value they bring to the classes. They tell the students like it is and why they need to learn what they are being offered as content. This increases both their motivation as well as their enthusiasm for the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Scott, I agree with you about the need for us instructors to bring passion for our field and enthusiasm for teaching about it to our classes each time they meet. We need to be role models for our students so they will see what they can do in their field as a result of effort and self discipline. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, Thank you for mentioning on of the rewards of teaching. It is such a great feeling as you mention to have a student come back and share how much you were a part of his or her career development and growth. You are doing a great job of modeling what a professional in your career field should be like. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, The more they share the more they become invested in the course. As instructors we need to look for ways we can get them to start sharing no matter what the content might be. This way they start to own what is being taught. Keep them sharing. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Diane, Good way to set the stage and get them excited about what is going to be covered and what they are going to learn. Tying this information to their career goals will also help to get them ramped up and enthused for what is to come. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Shannon, Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery. You are offering both with your approach. This way you are enhancing their learning while increasing their engagement. This is a win win situation for your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, You make a good point about how the first impression sets the tone for the class. This is so true and it is essential that it be a good one so the students feel like they are in a good place to receive quality instruction. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
