About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Marina, For me being there early and greeting the students is fun because I can be informal with them and catch up on what is happening with them. This sets the stage for an engaging class to come since I can relate to the student based upon what they have shared with me during our greeting time. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marina, You are most welcome. By have a clear and concise syllabus you will reduce student anxiety and frustration since most of their questions will be answered via the syllabus. In addition, the layout of the course will be covered so they quickly see how and what they need to do to be successful in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marina, I wish you much success as you step into this wonderful field of teaching. You have a good start on success with the knowledge you have along with your career experience. Happy Teaching. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Andrea, Well said in terms of the necessity of connecting the content to career success. They need to see why the content that is being offered is in the curriculum and how it applies to their career growth. When they do they start to see the relevance of the course to their future. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Pauline, It is amazing how little things like this can really motivate students. I try to keep in mind that adult learners are just taller children so they respond to treats and recognition just like kindergarten students do. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Pauline, The more student feedback the better. By having this feedback you can learn how to make changes or adjustments in the course to be even more effective as their learning leader. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
MaryAnn, Well said about enthusiasm. I am starting approximately 300 students in my courses in two weeks and I am excited about meeting each of them and learning about their lives and experiences. We are going to have a good time during introductions and ice breakers and then we are going to build a solid foundation for learning during the next 15 weeks. This is what makes being a teacher fun. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kathy, Passion for your field combined with enthusiasm for teaching about it creates a win win situation for the students just as you have indicated. It is fun to learn from someone that cares about the field and the success of students. Keep up the good work! Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
MaryAnn, Your last sentence speaks about a key part of what we do as instructors. By knowing about our students and then working with them on their goals and expectations we can be the support and mentor they need to have for course success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Edwin, Thank you sharing this experience with us. This reinforces the value of changing instructional delivery and change of pace so you can prevent the 100 mile stare because most of us teachers have see this stare too many times. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
