About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Dona, Good approach. The more you can help them "own" the content the better. You are doing such with this strategy so they can become invested and have a good return as a result of the investment. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Reginald, Good steps to follow in order to help your students see the value of the course content and how it impacts their career growth. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Edwin, Finding and creating an environment in which students are comfortable and can stay engaged is critical. Sounds like you have found ways to make this happen as you move your students forward in their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Reginald, Well said. Without passion for the content and enthusiasm for teaching it the students can very quickly start to drift away just as you mentioned. Sounds like you are bringing both to your students and the results are engaged students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Edwin, This is a great problem solving way to get them engaged because first they have to think and problem solve and then you walk them through the process. This is information that will stick in their working memory bank for later use. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Donna, Good way to stay current and on top of where your field is going. You are gaining your information from those that are in the field each and everyday so your students know they are getting the latest from you their learning leader. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Pauline, Very true. What are some ways that you show that you care about your students and their success? Thanks for you input on this. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Pauline, Good point. Being a part of a learning community helps students to see how they can contribute their knowledge and experience to complete a project or solve a problem. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Maria, Try something new and different. Think about how you have presented a topic and then consider how you might present the information in a different way or through a different format. This will get your creative juices flowing and you will get as excited as your students as you share the content with them. This will generate renewed enthusiasm on your part and increased motivation for your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, I agree. We need to bring passion for our field along with excitement about teaching our content to class each time it meets. Both of these elements help to "sell" the value of the course to our students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
