I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Tom, In our culture of having everything now it is tough for students to realize the value of what you are trying to teach them. If they will stop and reflect on the situation they will be able to formulate some possible outcomes that will work. Keep up this good effort as it will really help students with their careers in the future. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, Food the source of so much interaction and connection. No matter the age food draws people together. So share the food and enhance the social interaction and you will be showing your students that you care about them as human beings as well as students. This is the foundation upon which rapport is developed. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Raina, This is a good point and one I call connecting the career dots. If we can on a regular basis connect our content to career success we increase the value of our content to our students. Then when they ask "Why do we need to know this?" we have an example of application and career development which is why they students are there in the first place. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Martin, This is a good point. It is easy to make an assumption that is not accurate and the result is a disconnect with students. This is why with ongoing feedback as you mention we can keep our student engagement level high. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, You have a very supportive and comfortable style as it relates to student engagement. This is what will keep them coming back to the class and increasing their satisfaction with their program. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Billy, You have developed a good sequence to your instruction. Immediate use of newly acquired knowledge is valuable to students in terms of seeing relevance and application of content. This is what increases the retention of content but also increases the value of the course to students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, You are teaching such a critical course for your students. By keeping them engaged and coming back you are helping them to create a future for themselves. Without your courses they cannot move forward and you are helping them to realize that. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Monica, You are using the two elements I believe are needed by an instructor with your students. They are passion for your field and enthusiasm for teaching about it. This is a win win for everyone as it lets you share your excitement about your field as well as gives your students a model to follow for themselves. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, This is very good information to have as you mention. The more you know about your students and their goals the more accurately you can plan your instruction and target their learning preferences. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tammy, I like hearing examples like this as they show that respect was developed between the two age groups because they come together with a common cause, that being the course content and projects within the course. This is how the work world operates and you are helping them to see how they need to interact with colleagues to accomplish goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
