About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Jared, Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery and you are offering just that with this approach. I know your students appreciate how you keep their interest. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sherri, Good way to help them overcome their fear about a new course. Getting them settled in and feeling comfortable is important. They then can start to focus on what it will take for them to be successful in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sherri, Good point because they need to remember why they are there and who they are there for. Remembering both of these elements will help them to stay on task and move forward in their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jared, This is so important and it is good you take the time to cover this. They need to understand how important professionalism and career development is to their future success. Also, I really like the effort you put into them understanding that it is up to them to succeed. Just because they have paid tuition doesn't mean that they get an A, they have to earn their grades. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
RICHARD, So do we and that is why I have my own handout to give specifics to the students. I include dates, and assignments so the students will know how to plan their work to achieve success in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sherri, Thank you for sharing your experience with instructional planning with us. I know these comments will be helpful to instructors, especially those that are just starting their teaching careers. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
DANIEL, Good strategy for walking the students through the reflective thinking process and getting them to see how they can make application of what they are being taught while solving problems. Problem solvers are sought by most employers so the more we can help them be such the more valuable they will be when on the job seeking market. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jean, You make a very good point about how some students need some extra support if they are going to become a part of the class and grow while taking the course. As you mentioned you have seen them make this all important step once you have given them some attention and help them build their confidence. This is what being a learning leader should entail. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jared, A well prepared syllabus gets everyone on the same page on the first day. The students then can get a picture in their minds of what they need to do to be successful in the course. A well prepared syllabus also reduces anxiety for many students because it answers their questions and helps to get them settled into the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jared, This is a good mix to have with students due to the learning that is involved along with the personal attention that is given. This gives each student an opportunity to grow and gain new knowledge while making applications. Thanks for sharing this model with us. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
