About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Jim, Like your comprehensive approach to developing and using your instructional style. This is good information for other instructors to review and consider, especially those just starting their careers. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Keith, The reinforcement of the content presented it a good way to increase retention. You are doing that with this approach and I know it is effective for your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Katie, I agree with you on this. If students do not leave school with an understanding of what it means to be and act professional in their field they are not going to be successful. You are helping them to develop into the next generation of professionals in your field and this is a big responsibility to fulfill. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lawrence, I agree and it is always a great think when I see my students moving to this level. This is the "wow factor" for me because I know they have arrived and will be able to move forward in their careers. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lawrence, This is why we need to help our students to be critical thinkers so they can be problem solvers. They need to analyze a situation and then come up with some viable options, select one and then proceed while making sure the patient is properly cared for. These are the types of employees that are being sought after and students need to understand that so they can develop themselves into to those individuals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lawrence, This is why we need to offer learning experiences that helps students to explore all options and think outside of the box. If we don't our students will be short changed in their education and not be the problem solvers we want them to be. They need to learn how to work for their answers to problems that are presented to them because this is what they are going to encounter once they enter the workplace. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Greg, You are the learning leader so your attitude goes a long way in helping the students become engaged in the learning process and your example supports that fact. Great job and I know your students appreciate what you are going for them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Paul, Thank you for sharing your story of how you came back to school and was able to adjust to being a student once again. Examples like this are what our students need to hear about so they will see that their instructors understand what they are going through and the instructors are there to support them if they are willing to put forth the needed effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
JOHN, Great way to make the instructional process more real for the students. You are helping them to use their own life experiences as part of the learning process as well as content. I would imagine you get some great pictures of all kinds of different heating and/or cooling systems. These pictures open the door to all kinds of discussion and learning opportunities. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tom, This can be quite a challenge for sure. I try to help my older students to have some success early in my courses so their confidence can grow as they get settled into the course. Once they get settled in then they are more open to learning how to use different forms of technology and are willing to work with some of the younger students to learn the needed skills.
