About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Samara, So true and so important. The more personal you can make it for them the more value they will associate with the course. The result will be increased motivation and excitement about what they are learning and getting to apply. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Theresa, Three good strategies to use. All of them help to get students engaged and focused on the content being shared. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Paul, This is a powerful and engaging learning tool. As you have experienced this format gets the students involved and using the content that has been covered as well as getting them to thinking about future content that is going to be shared. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Theodore, I am a big fan of case studies. They help students to see and apply the content that is being offered. This moves the students from being passive to active learners as they are using their problem solving skills to come up with solution to the problem presented in the case study. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Paul, Right you are. This keeps the flow of the course going from one session to the next and reduces confusion on the part of students about what they need to do in order to be prepared for the upcoming class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Andrew, Good way to establish a clear understanding on the part of students of how the course is going to operate and what the expectations are. This way the students can leave that class session knowing what they are going to have to do to have success in the course. This sets the stage for the sessions to come. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Thomas, This is a fun time as students are excited about the new course and what they are going to have to do to be successful in the course. Doing introductions and ice breakers gets them settled in and then you can lay out the requirements and expectations and get the course underway. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Theresa, It is the foundation upon which of the rest of the course is built so that is why it is so important to make it a good one. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, So powerful and so important. Students need to have exposure to the world they are preparing to enter. Field trips and guest speakers help to "sell" the course content to the students as well as get them motivated. I like also that the employers are candid with the students. I tell my students what the employers are looking for and some hear me and some don't. When an employer says the same think it really sinks in and the students start to see why I am teaching what I am. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Theodore, That is my preferred seating arrangement as well. I like how it lets the students be on the front row, since there is only one row, and so there is no hiding from me when we are having discussions or Q&A sessions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
