About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Theresa, I use role play a lot in my classes as well because it really helps students to get involved in the material and learn how to react to different situations. I am sure this is true for your students as they learn how to function is a salon environment. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Theodore, I think this is a good strategy to follow as it helps the students learn how to learn in other venues. The value of learning this will help them as as they go out into the workplace and receive information in many different ways. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Samara, Very good question to ask the first day as it gets the students to thinking about how much importance they attach to being in school. They need to see that they are preparing to enter a career area they have chosen so they need to work as hard as they can to be successful in the course if they want to make progress toward their career goals. They need to personalize their education. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Paul, Well said and so important for us to remember in our planning and student interaction. We must set this standard and then live it for our students to do less is to short change them in their professional development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Amity, This is such a good way to exchange information about the students and yourself. This way everyone learns about everyone else and this helps to get the class settled down and ready for the up coming sessions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ashley, Good way to keep everyone on the same page and looking forward to what is going to be covered next. The result will be less anxious students that are comfortable with the instructional setting. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, I think students sometimes forget that we are all former students ourselves. We have set where they are and had to develop our careers just like they are going to be doing. We do have some life experiences to offer them even if they don't think so. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, Respect and rapport are the two essentials needed for teaching and learning success. Respect is earned and needs to be two way between the instructor and the students. The end result will be the development of rapport and positive interaction for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, Good advice to share because this advice is based upon the realities of life. Yes, mistakes will be made but it is from these mistakes that learning will occur. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, Have these same students. Coming from a background where going to school was an honor I am amazed that these students take being in school so lightly. That being said they are there and it is our job to try and get them excited about school and valuing the course they are taking. Keep up your good effort as it may make a difference in the lives of some of your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
