About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Ruthie, 96% of individuals that start a diet or exercise program fail within six weeks. The primary reason is the lack of self discipline and a clear outcome goal. This is not much different than that of what our students do when they fail to develop the self discipline it takes to be a successful student and then a successful worker. You are right on in terms of self discipline being the core success factor. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mary, You make a number of very good points in relation to how we can provide motivation opportunities for our students. They need to see our passion for our field and our enthusiasm for teaching about. When they do we will see their excitement spread and learning will expand for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mary, Right you are in terms of the demands that instructional preparation and delivery requires of instructors. We need to keep our goals clear in our mind and enjoy the feedback we get from our students when they learn something new and grow in their career development. This is what will help us see that all of our work is worth it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mary, Thank you for these good comments on how to use the human factor as a way to engage students and to expand their critical thinking skills. You are helping them to not only learn content but how to make applications and grow in their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Denise, Real world examples help make the content come alive. The more examples you can share and stories you can tell the more value you create in the content for the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Joseph, This method also helps them with their critical thinking development. Much of what we do in the workplace is problem solve so our students need to develop this skill set as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sheila, Like your style because it is an effective way to keep the interest of your students. A shared laugh goes a long way in helping students to reset their brains and thinking about what has just been covered in relation to what is going to be covered. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sheila, This is a comfortable sequential way to start a new class off. The students get settled in and learn more about each other as well as what the course expectations are. This gets everyone on the same page and thinking about the course to come. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kenneth, I am a big fan of guest speakers and field trips for the reasons you list. The places you take your students are the places they will be visiting once they are on the road. They need to see what the places are like and how they will fit into them as they prepare to become professionals in this field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sheila, Yes, they do and they are so valuable to students. They get to see and learn about where they are heading in their careers. These visits can be real motivators as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
