James is the Senior Associate at JAJ & Associates, Adjunct Faculty and eLearning Consultant at MaxKnowledge and member of the Board of Advisors of Dream Catchers Global. James was the Associate Provost of Faculty Development, President of the Online Division at Harrison College and the Director for the Center of Technology Resources for Indiana Business College. Because of his extensive background in technology and his entrepreneurial spirit and passion for assisting aspiring business owners, James has provided his leadership/project management skills in many start-up operations mentoring dozens of young leaders over his career. All providing great growth opportunities for his stakeholders.

James has developed more than 50 courses and dozens of programs in the areas of technology, business, progress management and general education. James has been an instructor for more than 15 years during which time he provided training to over 500 trainers and more than 5000 students. His academic background includes a Masters of Education in Occupational Training and Development and is currently working on his doctoral dissertation in Higher Education Administration emphasis on Strategic Enrollment Management. James enjoys working with students and assisting them through complex concepts which he is able to turn into easy to understand and usable skills.

Joe, for some students the fear is bread out of learning disorders or a lack of understanding how best to prepare or even take a test. In the career college sector, many students are career changers and have been out of formal education for several years. They may have forgotten the skills needed to be good test takers. The myth is students that do not perform well on tests did not study the materials properly and the reality needs to incorporate that some students may have learning disorders and no matter how hard they work they will have difficulty getting… >>>

Heather, I really like that format and also encourages students to know their reference resources. I have also seen where instructors will create open book exams that are timed which also ensures students know their resources well. If they are not familiar with their resources then they still will not receive a good grade due to the fact they need to have good time management and know where to find information quickly. david, in what ways do you discuss intrinsic and extrinsic motivators with your students? The motivation of money can be overpowering at times and cause some students to select a career field for the wrong reasons. Investment Banking is a career that can offer its participants a lot of money but the work schedule of 80 to 100 hour work weeks can burn out the vast majority of individuals if they are not totally committed. Understanding the importance of finding intrinsic motivators within a career field can be important to the long term success of many students. Thanks for anything… >>>

gayle, the first step of moving from a good instructor to a truly great instructor is a willingness to look at yourself and see if a change is needed on your end. The best instructors I know went through several stages of perfecting their techniques before they were considered to be really great. Lani, do you feel lecturing is the only way to get information out to your students? If 80% of your students understand the materials while 20% struggle do you feel the 20% are not working hard enough? Lecture may not always be the best approach and I highly recommend you do some of your own research on teaching and learning to investigate other methods of delivering a lesson plan. Obviously if 100% of your students are responding well to your lectures then there is nothing that will need to be changed but if you consistently notice a few students struggling… >>>

Patrick, another way of looking at assessments is also a measure of your effectiveness as an instructor and the quality of the lesson plans. If 19 out of 20 students are doing well quarter after quarter in your classes then your methodology and quality of the lesson plan may not need much change. However if you notice that every quarter there are several students that are falling behind or not achieving the goals of the lesson plan then something else may need to be considered. Too often novice instructors look at the averages and say over 80% of their students… >>>

Pamela, how do you manage actual learning disorders that could be the cause of poor results on assessments? For some students the fear is more rooted in a lack of understanding of the materials regardless of how much time they spend studying the materials. They may also lack the skills to formulate questions or be intimidated if they feel they are the weak link within the classroom. Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson
Carolyn, many students have enough negative energy in their lives without more coming from their educational experience as well. By focusing on more positive approaches to transfer knowledge and get students engaged the issues that cause students to lack motivation tend to go away by default. I am not a big fan of threats and using the fear factor model of higher education and have seen first hand how effective positive energy and well developed lesson plans can impact even the most unmotivated student. Joel, well stated. Teaching students how to be a student sometimes gets overlooked or is thought to be a waste of time yet many students in career colleges have been away from higher education for a while or some students directly out of high school may not have developed good skills in the first place. Taking some time to just focus on how to be successful as a student can may huge dividends on overall student success. James Jackson
