Kelley, So it sounds like you have some baby boomer influence in your communication which can help you with that generation. How do you adapt for the millenial generation? Dr. Jean Norris
I can't think of a specific analogy but this is where the balance between management and leadership comes to play because to stay motivated to lead we need to keep in mind the management style that will work best with a team. Thank you for the additional thought you put into this forum.

Yolanda, The same approach we use for our students could work for their parents as well. When a student or parent communicates that the cost of tuition is more than they expected, a great question to ask is 'compared to what?' The answer they provide will give you a point of reference so that you know what resources you need to utilize to meet the challenge. As you point out, sometimes they simply don't understand and need additional information to bring clarity to the situation. Give it a try and let us know how it works for you. Dr. Jean… >>>

So if I understand your comment, the environment doesn't necessarily influence your motivation to lead but the environment could impact how you respond? Do you have an example of this? Dr. Jean Norris

Bobbi, So how do you know which style to use and when to use it? Dr. Jean Norris
Bobbi, Great observation. It's great that you can relate to more than one generational group. What are you doing to better connect with the millenials even though they may not use your preferred communication methods? Dr. Jean Norris
Bobbi, I'm glad this eLearning lesson was helpful and provided insights on the communication styles of each generation. Technology has certainly made our jobs interesting, hasn't it? What can you do to 'keep up' and improve your technology skills? Dr. Jean Norris
David, You hit the nail on the head. When we can be flexible with our communication and customize our approach to match the style of the other person, it can help to build rapport and make the other person comfortable. Thank you for your post. Dr. Jean Norris
Erin, Great idea! You're right, perfecting a skill takes practice and practicing with your friends might even help them learn these skills too! Let us know how it works out for you. Dr. Jean Norris
