Tammy, There are no easy answers to things like this. Unfortunately, many students who are attending using funding from someone else, including Title IV loans, do not seem to realize they are wasting their investment until it is too late. The most effective strategy is to plan and facilitate a compelling class meeting. Consider structuring the grading and sequence of activities such that being in class on time and staying until the end provides a tangible reward in terms of their grade. Celine, Some institutions have contra ted with companies to provde counseling and other services that most smaller schools are unable to provide. Reports are mixed over how many students use the services. Reports are encouraging regarding the success of students that do use the services. Jeffrey Schillinger

Sandra, The calls to students are as effective as the attitude present in the caller. If it is a "check in the box" just so the caller can say "I called," it will not be as effective as the way you seem to be calling, with the good intentions of supporting the students. Jeffrey Schillinger
Stephanie, We have had great luck with former students talking to our students. We sometimes have students who are nearing graduation talk to struggling students as well as brand new students. Jeffrey Schillinger
