Thank you for this thoughtful post, Larry. My first career college position was as a general education instructor. Adult students were resistant because they did not see the need for this type of course. I found that making sure the students knew how the course applied to their goals and finding ways for student to find early success upon which to build. Jeffrey Schillinger

Dr. Cheryl, This is a common approach. The effectiveness of this approach varies based on the attitudes of the folks making the calls. Some faculty make the calls just to say they made them. Others make the calls with a genuine desire to help. Jeffrey Schillinger
Dr. Carlton, Some teachers are leary of using such a system becasue they feel the technology is unreliable and/or they feel it is too impersonal. How do you make using this technology a more personal experience? Jeffrey Schillinger

Cornelius, Sometimes the degree is secondary to other concerns, such as retooling for a new career. The knowledge and opportunities outweigh the degree for a lot of adult students. Jeffrey Schillinger
Daisey, Thank for this post. A few schools have found ways to share the information you are collecting with other members of the staff sso that each student's motivations and challenges are availabl to other advisors and faculty members. Our college has the motivational reasons entered into the student information system so that we can pull reports on them. What do you think of sharing ths information (with the student's knowledge)?
