Simone, Great post. I use it to teach students how to write concisely. This is a tool that will serve them well. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dr. Christopher, I love your statements. You must have a policy in place as well as expectations of the students and of the instructor. I also point students to stories (and there are many) about social media blunders. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Simone, You are so RIGHT! You should have polices and place and hold students and yourself to them. It amazes me how many people will just "do it" without a framework of expectation. Your strategy is great. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dr. Christopher, What a GREAT post! I agree with you but many instructors' fear of inappropriate connection with someone outside. You have to do what you think is best but I really think your students benefit greatly from your social networking views. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Simone, That is true! I used to say "don't put anything on Facebook or an email you wouldn't want to see on the side of the road". Many of our students DON"T CARE! Then they don't understand when it works against them professionally. The work world does look at their employees Facebook! Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Ed, You use the same analogy I do! I am not sure where students get the idea that being online is easier. I do try to get them to use calendaring and work at putting the calendar in their phone. They check that first! Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Tom, You make great observations. I have used calendaring as a way to get them to plan for their week and that means planning everything. I have them to send me a calendar for me to look at. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Gail , I agree with you and I like that you continually keep them engaged. I now put in my syllabus my response time frame. I also have them determine what they need to work on based on my feedback through journaling. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dr. Christopher, I think you speak for many. Time management is so important. Do you use a rubric to evaluate the the discussion board posts? Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Phyllis, I agree with you. How much do your students interact with each other? Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
