Rebekah, Great post. I would also add that you have to set expectations so students know what to expect and can make sure they have what is needed to be successful. It surprises me how many students try to take online courses without technology. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Marco, I do email students to tell them their work is not uploaded and they have a certain time frame to address it. I am beginning to rethink that. I am really finding when I set "hard" dates with assignments students to meet the deadline. It seems when I back off the expectation they do to. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Marco, I agree with you. They need to see that poor communication has consequences. I make students write to me in proper English through their email. I have rubrics for everything. That way they know exactly what is expected of them. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Marco, True, but you want to make sure you really give thought to interaction and outside work. Even in an online course I talk to my students about work on and offline. Much like the discussion we used to have with students about time spent outside of class on a subject. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Gail , Great post. With the technology we have today we can create the "individualized improvement plans" that are beneficial to the students and not onerous on the instructor. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Gracie, I agree with you. If you can give students little success in online learning there more apt to take risks in their learning. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Loriann, Do you think it is the content or the delivery that has to be changed? Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Loriann, You make such an important point; it isn't just us wearing different shoes students do too! For us as facilitators we need to recognize the shoes they are wearing to help them adapt to the learning. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Loriann, You are the first to really recognize engagement and interaction. That is not just with the instructor but with all in the course. Online learning should not even hint to isolation. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Loriann, True, you make a great point. The technology does need to be ease to use for both the student and instructor. I do think the first place you should look for technology is within the institution particularly the LMS. For most online learning it begins and ends with the LMS so students are familiar with the environment. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
