Good points, Alphonso. Entering students are concerned about how they will fit in with their new colleagues. It's important to give them opportunities to get comfortable in the new environment. They can't do that when we are lecturing them about the rules.
Cathy, which of these practices are most effective/useful for you?
Erica, does that give you enough information to continuously improve what you do? If not, any thoughts on how to get that type of feedback?
Delia, how often do students ask to meet with the Program Director and/or Director of Student Services? If the issue is so pressing, why wouldn't they request a meeting through another means?

How long has the school been offering this course, Debi? Long enough to observe results? Does it have full academic status? What do you cover?

Tammy , do you use a common text for your email to new students or do you personalize it in some manner? It seems to me that it would be important to avoid a feeling of a "form letter".

Sharon, what do you mean by pre-work? How do you do this?

This effort to contact students who miss class is one of the practices that sets career schools apart from other higher ed institutions. I'm sure there is a lot of discussion in faculty rooms about the practice but it seems to be a standard practice at many of our schools.
Debi, what do you mean by check with students daily? Is someone assigned responsibility to talk to each student? Sounds like a big job.
Tammy , how and/or why are retention efforts different for each department? Doesn't it make sense to have a uniform set of procedures?
