Those are all tough challenges Edward but all very common for instructors. As for your issues with not having enough time and getting overloaded with work, sometimes setting expectations really helps.
Yes, we've got to think about what we want students to learn and retain when designing our exam questions. Sometimes simple and easy to grade questions are appropriate for our courses. Sometimes they are not.

Yes, being clear in the syllabus helps. Another approach is to allow the students to be responsible for organizing the completion of their missed work. Let them follow up with you and not the other way around. This approach will save you time and also teach your students important lessons in responsibility.
That's a great approach Patrick but also very rare. Most instructors do the opposite.
I know it's sometimes hard to establish task importance Michael. I try to consider things like who will be impacted by completion of the task and what the outcome will be if the task is not completed. This usually helps.

Yes, sometimes the actions of others are very stressful. This is particularly true because they feel out of our control. The best approach is typically to be vocal about our hopes and expectations of others but to also understand that they will ultimately choose to do what they want.

Yes, I agree that it's nice to consolidate work and home lists to get a full view of what we need to accomplish Clifton. With these views, as you work your way down, you can really feel like you are making progress in all areas of your life.
Yes, it's tempting to complete easy tasks first and often because we often enjoy doing them. But balancing them with a few hard tasks too can put us in a better spot longer term.
