What could an instructor do to start the process of moving from the traditional lecture mode to active learning in his/her course(s)?
Michael, Yes, these "little" things can make such a difference in the lives of students. Renee Shaffer
Michael, Really good point about the browsers. Also remember that the LMS may be a little behind the curve dealing with accessibility issues so try not to wholly rely on its capabilities! Renee Shaffer

Michael, Boy, I remember when Dragon Naturally Speaking was out of the price range of most people. Thank goodness the prices have come down and many people in the "mainstream" society (elderly, etc) can use it also. Renee Shaffer
Michael, Additionally, sometimes the office of disability services may be able to assist you with retrofitting your course content to meet the needs of the students. It never hurts to ask! Renee Shaffer

Michael, It is also important to note that you might need to check with the office several times during the term because there may be some late "stragglers" getting their documentation in, etc. when seeking accomodation. It may come at midterm. Renee Shaffer
Michael, This is a wonderful plan. Checking in with the student will make them feel more a part of your course and also give them the sense that you care about their success in your course. Renee Shaffer
Cyndy, Yes, one of the biggest factors is for the instructor to take the time and effort to assist the students with disabilities to maximaize their learning. Often times, instructors don't want to take the time and the extra work involved. Renee Shaffer
