Ralph-- It certainly sounds as if the majority of your students have real challenges before starting classes...relocation/housing and the need to find employment. It is wonderful that you have departments to assist in this. Susan
Steve-- That's a wonderful idea and certainly the million dollar challenge. There are significant culture differences that make a huge difference in how we interact. Susan
Tiffany-- You make excellent points about the 'traditional' orientation. We tend to make it about us telling them al the thing we want them to know rather than making them feel comfrotable and acclimating them to our institution. Susan
Dennis-- While participation in the orientation would certainly add additional value to that forum, I am happy to hear about your participation in open houses. This give the prospective students and their families the opportunity to get to know the instructors first-hand! Susan
Dennis-- Excellent idea! If you are able to incorporate specific examples and analogies based on what your students are interested in, I am sure makes a huge difference. Susan
Laura-- This sounds wonderful! Susan
Richard-- That is wonderful that you allow them to sit in on your class. That is an excellent way for propsective student to get a real feel for the classroom environment. Susan
Lisa-- It is more difficult with larger groups, but one way is to have the students get in to groups and do this as a team. That format keeps the larger group managable and also helps them to build some relationships with fellow students. Susan
Kelly-- I really like the graduation cap and gown. Some institutions have taken them picture and give them a copy as well for them to keep. It can be a great motivator. Susan
Robert-- Great point. Everyone tends to reach as high as they feel they can reach...and encouraging them to get out of that comfort zone can help them achieve greater things than they ever imagined. Susan
