Phil-- I think it is great that you are following up right away with the students. This sends a great message that you noticed they were not there and that you care. Once they know that, they are more likely to better communicate when things come up. Susan
Jack-- Sad but true...students are often afraid to speak up and ask questions. It makes the class so much more rich and interesting for everyone if it is interactive. It helps everyone to see they are not the only ones who don't 'get it' as well. Do you use any specific techniques to encourage questions? Susan
Robert-- All excellent points and I completely agree that the first day sets the tone for the rest of the class. Making it informational, upbeat, interactive and interesting sounds like you have given a great deal of thought to how to make it a beneficial experience. Susan
Craig-- The format you suggest here can be highly effective. Students related better to other/former students and they provide a real example of what they can achieve if they complete their education. Susan
Lawrence-- The dress and appearance code is an interesting idea and certainly prepares them for the 'real world' where these things are very important. Susan
Erick-- You are correct...faculty make a huge difference in retention. They are the people the students spend the most time with and getting to know them is a huge benefit. Susan
Steve-- What exception customer service to go with the student to Student Services! It certainly sounds like you make every effort to ensure you students have a positive experience. Susan
Phil-- What an excellent and encouraging point you make about futures being tied together! I think this makes a great wtatement about the level of support you are willing to provide. Susan
Earl-- It certainly sounds like you have a great orientation! Tours, opportunities for interaction and meeting with the program director are all excellent best-practices. Kudos! Susan
Erick-- You make an important point about students sometimes not even knowing the right question to ask! Sometimes we just don't know what we don't know. Susan
