Bruce-- These are all great questions! Perhaps that could be part of an admissions 'essay' the student competes. Some previous posts here include collecting this type of information either in orientation or the first day. Susan
Edward-- This sounds great! Is it 3 full days or partials? What other topics do you cover? Susan
James-- I think its a great idea to have you involved in orientation especially because you teach classes later in the program. You offer a different and valuable perspective. Susan
Donald-- This is excellent! You certainly take the time to be prepared and welcoming to your students. Kudos! Susan
Michael-- You are absolutely correct. Keeping students focused on the end goal (a career) is critical. Unfortunately, sometimes 'life' gets in the way and they lose track of that. We need to continually remind them. Susan
Karl-- That's excellent. We often forget how demoralizing it can be to struggle with a concept. It is great that you recognize that. Susan
Edward-- I would agree, that the general fears of being able to succeed overall are, hopefully, gone by the time you have them in class. However, students tend to 'fear' each new session to some extent about their ability to succeed in that particular class. Susan
Robert-- Excellent! Sounds like you really make them feel and home and give them the confidence they need to succeed. Susan
Heinz-- That is an excellent point. For whatever reason, people in general tend to focus on the difference (perhaps we are taught that) rather than the similarities. Each person is different, but we have much more in common than not. Susan
Mohammed-- Right you are! Sounds like you do a great job. Susan
