Craig-- This is an excellent model. While some may feel it is redundant and/or takes away from material being covered the first day, I think reiterating key information and affirming their career goals will, in the long run, save time and help retention. Susan
Hector-- Great idea! And, having another student as a role model/support system is very effective. Great job. Susan

David-- That's a great question and often misunderstood. The FERPA laws preclude sharing some information except on a 'need to know' basis and other regulations apply concerning grades, financial, etc. to parties other than the student. This discussion is not focused on sharing information that is contrary to those regulations. There is information, however, that students share with the admissions, financial aid and other staff that are generic in nature and could be useful in retention. David-- Great observation. Isn't it interesting how people focus on themselves rather than seeing the big picture. Indeed...everyone is new the first week. Susan
Bob-- Sounds like you have a great program. I especially like that your President also attends and welcomes the students. That sets a clear tone for their experience with you. Susan
David-- We really haven't spent much time on the facilities issue, but you are absolutely correct. Something as simple as understanding how to navigate the building can be very important and reduce student stress. Susan
I really like your references to 'family'. If that is the culture and attitude at your school, that is awesome and you should focus on ways to keep that feeling as you grow. Susan
David-- You bring up an excellent point in that the admissions personnel really need to understand and clearly communicate the 'real experience' as you say. Retention starts in admissions with setting clear and realistic expectations. Orientation should reinforce those. Susan
Stephen-- That is very true. Senior-itis often takes over near the end of the program and other students are, in fact, watching closely. The tendancy for faculty can be to cut them more slack than normal--which in the end hurts us all. Great observation! Susan
Sean-- Great idea and I'm sure your offer as a 'first responder' is appreciated! Do they get a copy of your powerpoint? Susan
