Dr. Ryan Meers

About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Sandra , good question. There are many ideas & resources out there, some via the web & others you may want to discuss with some of your peers & see what has worked for them. One of the keys is to provide plenty of time & patience on your part as you work with these students. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Phuong, yes & this group work helps them learn how to listen to the ideas & opinions of others & really work through issues that might arise. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
dawanna, yes, this is a great reason to use the groups & the students will experience this as they engage in their professional working environments. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Christina, this is a great reason to do the peer evaluations. Also, this can help the peers evaluate one another on the soft skills of communication & listening to each other & not just how hard they worked. These are key skills for the job site as well. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Bobby, this is true & also the eye contact can help you read the students & determine if they are with you or if you need to cover something in a little more depth. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Joshua, these are all great points & reasons for us to be moving around & trying to be in contact with the students as much as possible. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Edward, a lot of this can come with more study & preparation in these areas & then you will become as comfortable with them as you are with the technical aspects & find the presentations that much easier. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Phuong, yes, listening really is a key communication skill. As you said, the students need to listen to me & their peers & I must demonstrate that I am listening to them & their questions/concerns as well. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Malerie, and at that point I would definitely argue if it should even be a goal, if I'm not allowed or encouraged to work on it. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
