calvin, This is great. We like the oversized business card as it is easier to read and tends to be kept and easy to locate in a pile of other cards. It sounds like your have a great Community Outreach program in place. You are connecting in many many places where people can learn about your school in a variety of ways and tell others. It sounds like your institution is omni present. That often makes people view your school as deeply rooted in the community and therefore credible and a great resource. Newsletters are always interesting and there are… >>>

Lea, This sounds great. Of most importance, it works for your school! Once figured out and worked, the job description methodology can be effective! We think that constantly checking with the employee is another way to keep the job descriptions relevant. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Don, Your welcome. Sometimes it takes a new approach to deal with old issues. We feel we have to encourage people to think in new ways. Otherwise we end up doing the same old things that don't work. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
PARIS, We agree. We also think job descriptions should have expectations re ability to innovate, create, handle problems, work with others, handle stress, see trends, and more. Also what does the person need to help out with other tasks at the institution (outside of their department) and work with students effectively. Sometimes the best job descriptions are those written by the person holding the job. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Don, Good point. Yes, students listen to other students and recent graduates. Peers are more credible. The value of Alumni is everywhere ! Instructors are pretty credible as well. They work in the field and can talk about life on the job. It is easy for instructors to build rapport with students. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Don, Plans are always challenging to implement. They are probably easier to create. The task is to keep everyone focused. Give people implementation assignments. Team people up who can work together creatively. Set deadlines and keep brainstorming going. It is exciting and energizing. Have someone keep track of progress so your staff is all aware of what is getting completed and what has fallen through the cracks. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

PARIS, Braining storming is exciting and energizing. We think that all interaction should have some brainstorming components. It gets people involved and keeps them involved in other tasks and responsibilities. It makes people think that they are worthwhile and their ideas of value. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

marissa, Having the right people in place is a challenge in itself! You are right that the right people do make a difference. Everyone at a career school needs a heart. You have a good point that group workshops and mentoring programs can fill in the staffing gap. Many schools look to their graduates and Alumni to volunteer their time. If grads had a great experience at your institution they will want to help out. Alumni can mentor, bring students to work, help out in the classroom and more. MaxKnowledge has a great course on how to set up and… >>>

Don, This is a very good point. We have given a blank organization chart to school staff and asked them to fill in the names and exact titles for each place on the chart. Not surprising is that there are rarely any org charts that are the same. That's not a good sign but it does show that yours is a common problem. How to solve? That is the challenge! One way is to work on the org chart in a group. You will probably discover there is duplication of work so you can get agreement on how to fix… >>>

marissa, This is a great start. Getting the right candidates when hiring is always a challenge. We like to get many people involved in the job description and search process. What are the skills needed? What knowledge and experience does the candidate have to have? How will the person fit into the culture and values of the school? There is a lot more to hiring someone than a checklist of what they can do. You might want to consider who will interview the candidates and what they will look for. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
