marissa, Very well said. Budgets are important to run any organization. Most regulatory agencies with career school oversight require budgets. Budgets keep everyone on track and working towards common goals. Frequent assessment to determine how you are doing keeps everyone on track. It's a win for everyone. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Don, Great points. There is no need to be limited. There is a need to look for creative solutions and it looks like you are doing just that. Trading services can be great. You might also consider how Alumni can assist. If you stay in touch with your grads and they have had a great experience at your institution, they will be happy to return to help out. We know schools where grads are a constant part of their admissions, career services, and education departments. They volunteer to help out at no cost. Alumni can be great resources. All it… >>>

marissa, Very interesting challenges and ways you are handling them. What I see mostly is that you are involving your Team to identify the challenges and also to develop ways to overcome them. What is important, it seems, is that your Team is working together. Not only are they working on how to deal with problems, but it looks like they are using the time to identify opportunities and creative solutions. We think that is so important. You might want to involve students and alumni as you are seeking solutions. Often they have the answers since they see things from… >>>

Debra, Very good comments about a plan. It is a guide that has the involvement of many people such as faculty, staff, and maybe even employers and grads. It's a way to stay on track while taking opportunities that present themselves. It's a measurement so everyone can say "how am I doing" against the goals set forth. It gets everyone working together and at the same time encourages innovation and creativity. It sounds like a Plan is a must in both our professional and personal lives! Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Genia, We think that prospective students have only one thing on their minds - a job after training! That is why we feel it is vital that the career services department be part of the admissions tour. In fact, career services staff should sit in the admissions department from what we see. You are right that it takes trust and time for students to see the value of career services, especially early on. You are right that the skills needed to go through the job search process take a long time to develop. Building confidence, for example, is a process… >>>

Genia, So well said! Placement says it all about your institution and word-of-mouth is the best (and least expensive) form of advertising. Usually Community Outreach initiatives come from the Career Services department. It is important to have an ongoing dialogue with employers. You of course want to know about their job openings. Also important is their training needs. Are your programs meeting their requirements? What new training will be required? You are so right that students need skills to get jobs, stay on the job, and seek raises and promotions. There are a lot of benefits to offering students and… >>>

Jeannie, It's great that plans are in place. It is always interesting to see how many on staff know the plans and current status. It is also interesting to see how often the plans are reviewed against what is actually happening. Again, there is a lot to learn from Plans. Plans are great in our opinion. There also has to be some flexibility as new data might point to modifications. thanks Dr. Susan Schulz
Kendra, We agree that career services training needs to start early and be consistent throughout the time the student is enrolled. There are so many skills to learn to be an effective job candidate. In addition to skills, students need to develop the self confidence to know they are good. It all takes time. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Kendra, We agree that impressive and accurate placement stats impact admissions. The facts clearly show that your institution provides effective training and assists grads to get jobs. Grads will want to refer your school. Employers will want to hire your grads. That's why we think employment skills training is so important. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Lucy, Sounds like you are exploring all media to get your school name out. It's great that you have an active Advisory Board. If members are chosen well you have the opportunity of gaining a lot of ideas. What is important is measuring results from all the marketing strategies. Look at the quality of your leads. Do they show up for admissions appointments and are they likely to enroll? Most important - is there a match between what they enroll in and their ability to graduate and get a job within a reasonable time? Your advisory board can probably refer… >>>
