Selimah, We also believe that placement, employment skills, and career services should occur throughout the students experience at school. In fact, we believe in the benefit of providing career services to alumni as well. We have seen increased success when students are required to complete employment skills workshops and even attend career service classes. Something to consider. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Selimah, Very well said. Our customers are our students and our employers. We need to make them satisfied so they will stay with our school. Success is a great marketing tool. Happy grads tell their friends. Happy employers welcome our grads and tell us about their training needs. It's a win win. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Lucy, This is great Lucy. It sounds like you have an active Community Outreach program. You know that your prime customers are your employers. If you make them happy with trained students who are work-ready then everyone wins and gets what they want. Imagine having such a great relationship with all employers that they will hire your grads as each student is ready for the workplace. Imagine employers telling you about the training they need for next year or the year after and you creating just the programs they need so they have employees when needed. It sounds like there… >>>

Duncan, Thanks. It sounds like you have a model community outreach program. It does take staying in touch with employers as you outline. It is also about getting involved in industry and organization associations. There are many ways to get and keep the attention of your community. The goal is to be seen as the place for training and work ready grads. Thanks Dr. Susan Schulz
Duncan, We agree that employment skills need to be taught in the classroom. For every course students need to know how skills and knowledge will be used in the workplace. Most instructors need to be coached on how to do this. We also agree that curriculum needs to train students to be work ready. It is important to keep asking employers what that means to them. It usually means updating curriculum. Thanks Dr. Susan Schulz
Duncan, Thanks. We think the pre hire concept can work for any career school. It certainly does for truck driving because drivers are constantly needed and you probably train Students to meet industry needs. You have a great success model. You train students to meet industry needs. Every career should be working hand in hand with their employers. Thanks Dr. Susan Schulz
Duncan, Thanks. We agree and believe that a full functioning career services department has a lot of influence. Students enroll to get a job. That's what gets and keeps their attention. Career services needs to develop and maintain employer relationships. That so many benefits. You have many people to contact for job openings as each student graduates. When grads are placed they have a lot to brag about and will tell others to enroll. Employers will be happy with new hires that came from your school. It is a win win all around. Thanks Dr. Susan Schulz
Antonia, The placement boards sound great. You might also create posters for each grad showing them as a student and then a photo on the job. Include copy showing how each overcame obstacles to get where they are. Often this information automatically sells the prospect on enrollment. Data has a lot or power. Teachers, in our opinion, should constantly talk about life on the job. Thanks Dr. Susan Schulz
Lucy, We agree in the importance of community outreach. Being members of professional associations is key. There are many other organizations in our communities such as economic development boards, Lions and Rotary, charitable organizations and more. Many would welcome presentations about the careers your institution trains for. Getting out to talk with employers is also part of community outreach. All these activities tell your community that yours is THE school for training and trained workers. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Randy, Wow. We are really impressed with all your are doing. We think your PR efforts must be reducing your marketing expenses! Hope you say yes. We are now focusing on the skills gaps and how career schools can research these gaps in their communities and add programs to meet them. You can find out by talking to employers as well as the economic development boards in your area, for example. What do employers need now and in the very near future in terms of skilled workers? What business and industry is being wooed to your area? They will need… >>>
