Loni, Yes Loni. Placement impacts on admission referrals, retention, graduation and of course placement and repayment of loans. Life in the workplace should be a daily discussion in the classrooms. Teachers can talk about how knowledge and skills are used on the job. Frequent visits from Career Services staff is a must. We believe that Career Services "assignments" are also a must. Students need skills and confidence to seek a job. It takes time. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Stephan , Tes, Steve. We agree. The Placement Department is one of the most important in a career school. Prospective students want to know about jobs! That's why they enroll. When Placement staff stay in touch with students it helps with retention too. Students gain the confidence to graduate and get into the job market. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Ronda, This is a great idea. You also show how important instructors are in helping students understand the world of work. We believe that instructors must talk about how skills learned in the classroom are used on the job. This helps students pre live what life on the job will be like. It increases retention too. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Ronda, This sounds great. We think that the people in students' lives should always be included. These people can be a support or antagonistic. So, good idea to know who are you are dealing with and help them understand the experience of the person in their lives. We also believe that Career services needs to be present in the lives of students starting on day 1. Plus stay a constant presence throughout school. We feel there is a benefit when students are required to meet with career services staff. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Jodi, We believe that too. In fact, we think that career services and placement should sit together. Prospective students want to know about jobs. Why not have them speak directly with the source of info and data. If you can't sit together then we suggest that Career Services be a long stop on a school tour. An active placement department also encourages students to stay in school and graduate. Career Services can also perform a lot of community outreach tasks so your school is known as THE source for training and jobs. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
David , We agree. Alumni are tied closely to placement success. Alumni can tell you where the jobs are and also coach students in the job search process. Alumni introduce you to employers who can provide great feedback about your programs and what training might be missing. Placement and alumni are such important parts of every career school. Gainful employment issues will motivate schools to put resources into placement. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Jesus, Yes, there are many resources for finding job openings. These include current employers and companies that don't yet hire your grads. Alumni are great resources and can tell you where the jobs are. There are many organizations in your community to network in to learn about jobs and externship opportunities. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Jesus, Yes, instructors, all staff, and alumni are all part of the career placement focus. Students can learn from each person associated with the school. Instructors can talk about how they use their skills on the job. Alumni can talk about the job search process, what it is like on first days at the job, and many other skills to successfully get placed. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Jesus, Students tend to enroll in a school to find a job. They are not always interested in the courses they will take but focus more on how they will get employment. Employment skills are more than resume preparation and interviewing. It includes many other skills including confidence building. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Jesus, Yes, we agree. Job placement gives a new student confidence about finding a job after graduation. Often employers visit the school to talk about job opportunities. Great career services also includes employment skills training and more. When students see the support they get to find a job they are more likely to stay. Thus efforts increase retention too.
