William, I agree. I am always careful to not create exams that are simply enabling the students to "list" or "sort" particular topics or terminology. When they memorize items, they typically cannot recall them, once they have finished the exam. This will not help them when they enter the career world. Tremayne Simpson
Ron, I agree. It is important that the instructor provided a simplified explanation of the objectives and the "journey" to accomplishing them, throughout the course. Tremayne Simpson
Cindy, This is excellent. In addition, it is a good idea to discuss how an individual activity, will be used to meet a particular learning objective for the course. Tremayne Simpson
Karen, Is this an introductory course for students? If not, it may be a good idea to use a diagnostic assessment to evaluate their prior subject knowledge. Tremayne Simpson

Tony, Reviewing student input can serve as a reflective opportunity. The student perception of an instructor's approach or usage of activities, is a great tool to use for self-observation. Tremayne Simpson

Evelyn , I agree that regulation is important. In addition, it is important to remind them that their suggestions must be related to the learning objectives of the course. More often than not, student input can be tangential. Tremayne Simpson

Karen, This is an excellent concept! You can also used the "exit cards" to find collective themes, that can be used to evaluate general, student comprehension. Tremayne Simpson
Timothy, Unfortunately, this is usually an "underrated" idea, however "getting off topic" is a common issue for most instructors. It is very easy to digress from the current lecture topic, however an instructor can take a "tangent journey" and have trouble finding their way back to the lesson. Structured plans can limit the "tangent journeys" that may occur. Tremayne Simpson
Jeffrey, I agree. Placing this idea within a collaborative activity, can be highly effective for presenting some of the course lessons. On many occasions, I have assigned course chapters to individual groups to present and I have continuously been impressed with the results. Tremayne Simpson

Laura, I like the idea of having a "student-centered" system. However, it is important to establish guidelines and to clearly define methods for students to provide their input. "Free-for-all" systems can become difficult to manage. Tremayne Simpson
