Patricia, I agree. Learning objectives are most effective, when they are specific and the desired outcomes are clearly defined. If they are vague, it is difficult to measure/assess student achievement. Tremayne Simpson

Evangeline, I have used this strategy for time management as well. Interestingly, an impromptu question and answer session, can prove to be an exceptional class experience. Sometimes the "unscripted" activities can prove to be the most engaging. Tremayne Simpson
Angela, Many instructors have used the Learning Taxonomy, however they were not aware that they were using it. If you have structured your assignments, activities and assessments on a basis of perceived student improvement, then that would be an informal usage of the Learning Taxonomy. Now that you have learned more about the concept, you will be able to structure your class in a more formal format. Tremayne Simpson
Shannon, I have used similar activities, with my students as well. Providing collaborative opportunities in the classroom, not only creates an inclusive and active learning environment, but it can also serve as an assessment tool for the instructor. Observing students while they are working in the groups, can give an instructor an idea of how well their students have understood a particular topic. Tremayne Simpson
E. , This is an excellent idea for identifying prior student knowledge. Getting the student to discuss topics/skills that they found interesting, can really start the class in a "positive light". From their suggestions, you are able to discuss how the identified skills/topics will be covered in your class, in a more advanced level. Tremayne Simpson
Elizabeth, I have also used a combination of a verbal and formative assessment of prior knowledge. In some cases students are better suited to discuss their level of prior knowledge verbally, whereas others can provide this information in a diagnostic exam. Tremayne Simpson
Patricia, This is an excellent method for engaging students with different learning styles. Creating diverse groups (based on student learning level) can motivate the "high-achieving" students and provide peer-induced learning for those that are in need of additional assistance. Tremayne Simpson
Kathryn, I agree that an "oversaturation" of PowerPoint can negatively affect student engagement in the class session. It has to be segmented, with opportunities for students to interact and discuss the content. Tremayne Simpson
Stanley, I agree. In addition, without learning objectives the student would not be able to clearly see how one course in the curriculum, aligns with their programmatic outcomes. Learning objectives help the students understand how their course works, within the bigger "puzzle", which is their program curriculum Tremayne Simpson
Kelly, This is an excellent method for implementing the Learning Taxonomy. By creating a "gateway system" within the course content, the instructor is assured that their students will be ready to move on to higher-level assignments. Students that do not advance through the content, can be provided with additional practice and assistance that will enable them to move forward. Tremayne Simpson
