Mark, I agree. In order to approve effectiveness, instructional approach must coincide with overall student interests. Therefore, finding ways to implement more multimedia supplements, can enhance the experience for the students. Tremayne Simpson
Kelly, Do you ever encounter students that have a negative perception about the class? For example, a student that says that they enrolled into the course "because I have to take it". If so, how do you handle those encounters? Tremayne Simpson
Karen , I agree. All instructors wish for perfect attendance each class session, however taking a realistic approach, we know that this is not the case. Therefore, well-structured lesson plans should be available for students, so that they can still keep pace with the class in their absence. Tremayne Simpson
Karen , I agree with your approach to instruction. In general, being a course "facilitator" is the best method for addressing career college students. Providing traditional lectures do not achieve the desired result, because the career college student is not a "traditional" student. While it is more of a challenge to diversify the delivery of material, it is also more rewarding to know that the students will be directly applying the information to their future careers. Tremayne Simpson
LaTavia, I agree with your approach to delivering a "ready made" curriculum. Focusing on the most useful content, will assist with the students' ability to retain information and enable them to apply it for practical use. In some cases, "overdelivery" of content that is not necessary can defeat the purpose of providing students with important "tools" for their future careers. Tremayne Simpson
Henry, I agree. Professional development activities should be used as catalysts for the creation and implementation of course content. This ensures that the course will be "fresh" and exciting for the students. Tremayne Simpson
Discussion Comment
Richard, Giving a quiz on previously learned material, is an excellent strategy to assess student retention of information. Have you had a situation where a consensus of the students do not perform well on the quiz? If so, do you present the lesson again? Tremayne Simpson
Daniel, Have you found an improvement in student retention of information, since implementing the use of 3D technology into your lectures? Tremayne Simpson
Earle, I agree. Oversaturating the usage of technology, just to show that it is being actively used is a counterproductive, instructional method. Students should not be "lost" in the use of technology, however it should only be used as a supplement to their learning. Tremayne Simpson
Daniel, I use this approach as well. Similar to a television show, I provide a "teaser" or preview of the next class, at the end of each session. I feel that it is a good way to spark the students' interest and to provide them with a reason to attend the next session. Tremayne Simpson
