Dale, Nonverbal communication can be an excellent tool for gaging student comprehension. I agree, in some cases students can "mask" their body language, however that initial reaction (usually to a difficult concept) can be quite telling for an instructor. Tremayne Simpson

Gregory, Fitting large amounts of content into a small amount of time is difficult for all instructors. In order to make sure that I am effectively using classtime, I try to combine related topics and discuss them simultaneously, instead of presenting both concepts separately. Once students are able to understand the theoretical relationships, it generally produces a higher-level of information retention and it saves time. Of course this works because I typically teach Communications and many of the theories and processes are inter-related. Tremayne Simpson
Donna, I agree that large class sizes can make it difficult to interact with all of the students. I find that using the student online discussion board, is an effective way to provide the students with an opportunity to express themselves and relate to the content. In the discussion boards, it is great to hear comments from students that do not verbally participate in class. Tremayne Simpson
Miriam, I agree. The learning taxonomy also reminds the students that learning is process-based. Before they are able to apply their skills, they have to progress accordingly, without seeking "shortcuts". Tremayne Simpson
Brian, I also use an online forum to conduct discussions "outside of class". Interestingly, many students that do not verbally participate in class, frequently provide posts in the online format. Providing "in class" and forum discussions, can maximize the amount of student participation in the course. Tremayne Simpson

Brian, This is a unique method for gathering student input. Setting-up the class in a "round table" format creates a "safe" environment for the students. I am sure that they are more candid with their responses in this format. Tremayne Simpson

Clifton, Your lesson plan configuration sounds like an effective method for addressing student learning pace. Once you have assessed your students, do you have to revise the lesson plans and re-distribute or are assignments "generically" categorized so that you can make "seamless" changes? Tremayne Simpson
