Billy, I agree that it is always a good idea to periodically assess your students. In addition to providing short quizzes, an instructor can do some "Socratic questioning" during the lecture or assign activities that will enable them to apply their subject knowledge. Tremayne Simpson
Miriam, I have also tried this technic, however on many occasions, I have had to provide an impromptu lecture on the types of learning styles to my students. In my experience, I've noticed that there are many students that have not taking a learning style analysis and are not familiar with the terminology. Tremayne Simpson

Billy, I have adopted the same philosophy. In an effort to maximize the student retention of information, it is best to "lecture" based on the average attention span of the class. On days when there is a lot of material to cover, I try to implement periodic activities, that will segment the lecture. Tremayne Simpson

kathy, I agree. It is more important to make sure that the consensus of students are able to comprehend the material, rather than trying to keep an accurate pace with the course lesson plans. In cases where plans have to be revised, it is a good idea to provided the students with a revised topical outline and discuss the changes. Tremayne Simpson

Kanidrus , I agree. Students should never feel that they cannot be "candid" and appropriately express their concerns with their instructor. An "intimidating" learning environment can only make the student feel disconnected with the course and instructor. Tremayne Simpson
Kimberly, I agree. Using "old" lectures time-after-time, can be quite boring not only for the student, but for the instructor as well. In my experience, the students "feed off" of the enthusiasm of their instructor and not refreshing lectures can make the instructional approach, somewhat lethargic. Tremayne Simpson
Amy, Being the first to teach a course can be quite challenging. On one hand, you have the opportunity to set the parameters for the course, however you will also have to constantly evaluate and make revisions, after each class session. Tremayne Simpson
Amy, "Peer-induced" learning has proven to be a very effective approach, to overall student comprehension. In some cases, instructors have taken on the role of "facilitator", in an effort to encourage this type of learning. Tremayne Simpson
Richele, Yes but the intimidation can be mutual, because the older students tend to share vast experiences (that younger students may not have experienced), during examples during lecture. I think ultimately the two groups learn from each other and it can make the learning environment interesting. Tremayne Simpson
Gilbert, This is a great "best practice". With a full understanding of Bloom's taxonomy, the student will be able to comprehend the sequencing of assignments and how the course will cover the learning objectives. Tremayne Simpson
