Hi Sherrilyn, we try to incorporate expectations for when they respond to the initial discussion and the number of interactions. We also encourage our faculty to engage in a way that keeps the discussion going, so they may post prompts, ask for elaboration, weave common themes and keep the discussion focus, or ask learners for clarification and examples to name a few. Tina
Hi Carol, you make an excellent point about using instant chat or even the telephone to discuss the issue. I have more success with the telephone in resolving issues because the student can hear my tone and the synchronous nature of the interaction can all an easy exchange. Tina

Hi Joan, you make a great point. The instructor really needs to know how to personalize the learning experience for the student and provide appropriate levels of scaffoldling to help them successfully complete learning activities. Tina
Hi Kendra, so many learners complain about discussions just being "busy work", so I think helping the learner understand the relevance of the discussion is critical. Tina

Hi Tawanda, I think that is a great idea. Generally, my faculty do that when they are grading because they have to be at the computer anyway and they can stop and interact with learners if they have questions. Tina
Hi Tawanda, I agree with you that larger numbers are great for discussions, but a nightmare for grading!! Tina

Hi Deborah, I think there have been some great research to demonstrate that online is as good as classroom teaching. The biggest challenge for me is being available 24/7. Tina

Hi Deborah, yes, I agree that it's important to keep from stating that something is wrong but give Mike specific ways to improve. Tina

Hi Carol, I think you are spot on with your recommendations. For Kathy, she may also need more motivational support. Tina
Hi Deborah, all of these are excellent strategies. Motivation is also one of the keys to keeping her from dropping out. Tina
