we use a rubic in my class i find that it simplifies the grading for written work practicals and attendence

Courtney,
Yes, I think of it like "how can I measure the students degree of learning"? Evaulations, assessments, tests, these all contribute to that question.

I feel the need to evalutate new students to get a better understanding of where each student is so you can plan your classes accordingly. Another reason for the need to evaluate is to let other instuctors know if they need to push a little more, when sending students into advanced classes.

Ob,
True, yet we also may want to assess our effectiveness. We can learn of student progress and express encouragement and support. And the student learn how close to they are to meeting the course objectives.

with out it you have no way of knowing if students comprehends subject or material

Eddy,
I agree regular evaluations help keep a pulse on where our students are performing.

Evaluating methods are a great way to see if a student comprehends the professor’s work and teaching this allows the class to flow as one in learning. Also it shows were the weaknesses may be to help on and correct together.

Kyle,
In our moderen era we are required to have a relative objective-based grading system that can be applied universally to all students. My discussions with students allow me to convey progress while also developing rapport and camaraderie with my students. Having a good connection with all students helps bridge potential barriers to reaching them in the instructional process.

1. Inform Students of their progress

2. Let the instructor know what they do or do-not know

3. What kind of job the instructor is doing

4. Final Student grade

Garry,
Good. Too, I feel if we wait too late in the session, students will not have enough time to recover or make needed improvements in order to be reflected in their grade.

Evaluation of students allows the instructor to adjust leaning to ensure all students meet class objectives. It gives the instructor an opportunity to see how the student is comprehending the knowledge.

Timothy - I agree on the workplace simulation. For those of us teaching students who will enter the workforce right after graduation, they must be used to as many workplace ideas as we can expose them to. Getting used to being told objectively how one is doing is a skill - you must be able to accept criticism and move forward using your strengths. Great points!

Michelle,
These are good reasons. I like to also use personal time I have when I meet with students to offer my encouragement and support, as well as my advice and suggestions. I try to do this early on so there is enough time for corrections to occur.

Evaulations are a important way to get feedback for both the student and the instructor. To see the progess or to identfy an area for help.

Sokpheap,
Right. Of course, more broadly, we need to measure to what degree a student has learned (mastered) a topic or group of topics.

Barry Westling

Evaluation is a formative measure. We need to know how each students are performing in class, are they understanding the materials that are being taught to them, and if there is anything we can change in our teaching style to help students who are struggling.

Jeanine,
I agree - this is a form of teaching the principle (or an application of it). This is among the best tests for checking for understanding.

I'm most concerned with their ability to apply it outside the classroom or to other situations. I know if they're able to give me an example or tell me how they would use what they learned that they have absorbed and understood the content.

Leon,
Yes, of course we need to derive grades. Also, a bit of semantics. Evaluation implies comparison, whereas assessment implies measurement. I know these two terms are often interchanged, but they have specfic meanings in education, and actually serve different purposes. We can evalaute students all day long, and we should. Assessment is at predetermined measuring points. But alas, it's only semantics!

To help them assess their command of the subject matter, and to fulfil the instituitional responsibility of awarding credit for academic work.
