Hi Ricky:
The transfer of knowledge (from the teacher or textbook)is the ultimate goal of instruction. Assessment is the process of evaluating to what degree the student has learned. So, there may be many versions or assessment methods used, the emphasis should be on the learning that has occured, more so than the points and/or grading system. That said, all of the reasons you stated above are true and applicable.

There are many reasons why you need to give the students quizes.
To see if they comprehend the material.
To see if they are reaching their goal.
To see if the light bulb is clicking on, as far as them understanding the material that you are teaching or trying to get across to them.
To see what you have to change in order to get the point across to them.

Hi Sarah:
Great comments regarding assessing your students. Consistent, fair, and accuracy are the foundation for any assessment.

Regards, Barry

1. To see if they understand material. Do you need to change the way you are teaching the info? Do they have any learning challenges? Are you challenging them enough?
2. To give student reliable feedback as they journey through your course. They also want to know if they are learning.
3. It is motivating to see what you have learned and what tactics you will need to stategize for your next project or quiz.
